AAI :: REMINISCENCE :: From (बंड्या)
This blog is dedicated to my Aai (mother), Mrs Jaya Poundarik aka, Suman Ben. She lived a good as well as a long life. She graduated with honors in English from Agra University. I personally feel that her entry in the Poundarik family has made an impact. I am proud to have a mother like her.
Both my Dad & Aai used to call me “Bandya” (बंड्या), a naughty boy. She was a lady possessing strong will power. She was operated on for cancer in 1959. With limited medical facilities, the doctors had no hope of her survival, but she came out of it, just because of her strong will power.
At the age of 11 years, she lost her father. She was shifted to Gwalior at her maternal uncle’s house. She stayed there, till her graduation. Aai was studying in a famous M L B college, like Lata Mangeshkar she was fond of White Sari. One day my father, Dr. Vasant Poundarik, a fresh graduate from Bombay Veterinary college, went to see my uncle who was studying law in M L B college. There, My Dad ‘spotted ’ Mom. They got married on 27th December 1953.
Since childhood I have few unforgettable memories of Aai. I would like to share. There are many memories, a few selected below.
1 BOURNVITA
Since my childhood Aai had put a habit to take one class of milk, mixed with Bournvita, everyday. If we are going to relatives / friends, Aai will instruct the hosts to give me milk mixed with Bournvita. I was studying away from home, she used to write me letter, once in week and in each of her letter she will ask , “Bandya” ! Are you taking milk with Bournvita ?..(बंड्या ! तू दूध आणि बोर्नव्हिटा घेतो कि नाहीं ?). Till at the age of 66 I am taking milk and Bournvia / milk, unfailingly. This is just because of my mother.
2 MUSIC LOVER
Aai was a great music lover. Since morning hours she will put her Murphy Radio “on”. listening to All India Radio (AIR), Vividh Bharti and Sri Lanka Broadcasting corporation, from morning till 10.30 pm.
Music directors Anil Biswas, C. Ramchandra and Roshan were her favorites. She was a great fan of singer Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar. shukariya shukariya ye pyar tera (शुक़रिया शुक़रिया ऐ प्यार तेरा) from “Aaram” 1951, nain mile nain hue baware ( नैन मिले नैन हुए बावरे) and sine main sulagte hai arman (सिने ने में सुलगते हैं अरमान) from “Tarana” 1951 were her favorite songs.
She was the one who introduced, Pandit D V Paluskar voice in Poundarik's house.
“Tarana”, “Anarkali” and “Naubahar” were her favorite albums.
She was a good singer too, and enjoyed singing ‘ai ree main to prem deewani’( ऐ री मैं तो प्रेम दीवानी) from “Naubahar” She also used to enjoy singing ‘yeh zindagi usiki hai’ from “Anarkali”.
I inherited keen interest in hindi film songs from my mother. I proudly dedicate my book titled "LAXMIKANT-PYARELAL Music Forever” to my mother.
Ajay Poundarik. Vadodara.
